During the week, I work from home so Poppy is not left alone during the day. This means that I can leave the patio door open, and she loves to lie out on the patio. Note that I don’t leave my dog outside when she is home alone.
My dog used to lie outside on one of those raggy bath mats. Which she does love. She doesn’t need a lot of padding but she just does not like to lie on the ground.

I had a few points in mind when I was researching the best outdoor waterproof dog beds. Some of these are essential, but some are just ‘nice to haves’.
Waterproof
I know that waterproof does not necessarily mean 100% waterproof but I need it to be as water resistant as possible. Just so it can survive the odd shower if the rain blows in under the shelter.
Durable
All dog beds need to be fairly durable as they have to stand up to a fair bit of rough and tumble! As this bed will be used outside, it will need to be pretty robust. I am therefore looking for a bed made of tough material that is mold resistant. I would also like it to be breathable so it is less likely to get mildew.
Poppy occasionally likes to ‘kill’ her bed. So it needs to be able to survive a good shaking. The first bed I bought Poppy exploded everywhere when it was initially, and completely, ‘killed’. Now that I know that beds double as prey, I know to look for a robust pet bed as I know I will never get one that is totally indestructible.
An additional benefit would be if the cover is removable and washable in the machine. Or even replaceable.
Shape and Size
I would like the dog bed to fit into Poppy’s dog crate so it needs to be a standard size and rectangular shape.
Portable
As I am going to be buying an outdoor dog bed, I think it will be the best bed to take when we go camping with the dog. This means that the dog bed will need to be fairly portable.
Comfortable
With all these additional features, it is no good if it is not comfortable. Poppy does like her comfort when she takes a rest from terrorizing the neighborhood! So it needs to be made from a good material and possibly a memory foam bed.
